Electronics Characteristics of SIDAC

The SIDAC is a silicon bilateral voltage triggered switch. Upon application of a voltage exceeding the SIDAC break over voltage point, the SIDAC switches on through a negative resistance region to a low on-state voltage. Conduction continues until the current is interrupted or drops below the minimum holding current of the component. SIDACs feature glass-passivated junctions to ensure a rugged and dependable component capable of withstanding harsh environments.

How SIDACs Work

Blocked State:

When the voltage across the SIDAC is below its breakover voltage, the device is in a high-impedance, blocked state, preventing current flow.

How SIDACs Work

Triggering:

When the applied voltage exceeds the breakover voltage (VBO) in either direction, the SIDAC is triggered into a low-resistance, conductive state.

Conduction:

The SIDAC then allows a significant amount of current to flow, with a low on-state voltage drop

Switching Off:

Conduction continues until the current falls below the device’s minimum holding current (IH), causing the SIDAC to switch back to its blocked state.

Key Characteristics

* Bidirectional:

SIDACs conduct current in both directions, making them suitable for AC circuits

* Higher Power Handling:

They have greater power-handling capabilities and higher breakover voltages compared to DIACs

* Voltage-Triggered:

They are triggered by voltage, with their operation depending on the breakover voltage and holding current.

Applications

* Ignition Systems:

Used to generate high-voltage pulses for igniting gas-discharge lamps in HID lighting and gas appliances

* Surge Protection:

Protects communication and power systems during overvoltage events by providing a high-current path for surges

* Pulse Generation:

Creates high-energy pulses for applications like test equipment

 4* Relaxation Oscillators:

Integrated into relaxation oscillators to produce sawtooth waveforms for various electronic functions.
